Finds Friday: Rolling Romans...

Here we have a sherd of roller-stamped Argonne sherd from East Sussex. Although worn, the stamps are still distinguishable. The stamped decoration places the sherd to the second quarter of the 5th century AD.


Whilst Argonne ware is generally rare in Britain, this stamp particularly is key as it is believed to be the first known instance of this decoration being found in Britain.
